1. Custom Domain
First things first: I’ve gotten myself a domain name! I know this isn’t a very big deal for pretty much any IT-nerd, but it was nonetheless something special for me.
The most interessting part of all this was setting the DNS-redirects up in such a way that GitHub Pages correctly interfaces with the domain. I definitely have to take the time to write a full post on this, since the info I’ve found wasn’t 100% usefull or correct on all accounts. If only I had more time…
2. Layouts
I’ve done a whole lot of tinkering with the theme. It’s surprisingly fun to mess with various (s)css settings, html-codes and Hugo partials.
2.1. Fixed Top Bar
2.1.1. Improper Z-Levels
"Biggest" change is the now fixed (well, "sticky", technically) top bar. Had some interessting challenges with it: At first I had footnotes and the read-time display overlaying it when scrolling. Turns out that everything was drawn on the same z-level and everything that was defined (either in css or html, can’t remember, sorry) after it, was drawn above it. Fixed it by setting the z-level of the top bar to 100. Bit overkill, but hey, who cares.
2.1.2. Incorrect Section Jumping
Then jumping to sections via the table of contents was borked.
Turns out the browser was simply acting as always, scrolling in such a way, that the section title in question was just under the upper edge of the browser window.
Where now the top bar resides permanently.
Luckily the scroll-padding-top
css-setting exists and fixes exactly this issue.
I’m just not sure if having it lonely inside a html
key atop the _header.scss
file is the best way to enforce it…
3. Unified Posts-Layout
I’ve deactivated the posts single.html
layout and instead set the default one to be used with all the new features.
After all, they are nice features.
I also split all the post info snippets into discreet partials, so they can be reused easily later.
4. Post Info
Speaking of Post Info, I’ve tinkered a bit with that as well, so now the publishing date is listed after the summary, as well as some small QoL adjustments.
5. Admonition Icons
A big one for personal reason: I’ve finally got AsciiDoc Admonition Icons working! Turns out, all I had to do was register at fontawesome.com[Font Awesome] and add my code to the head file. Still have to improve how the actual admonitions are rendered, but that looks to be much easier.
6. Contact via Email
Since my domain registration came with a free email-account, I’ve changed the Author Name link in the footer to be a mailto:
link to said email.
Just in case someone wants to write me.
7. And More
I’ve done a bunch of other small stuff as well, but honestly, I can’t remember all of it and don’t want to crawl through the commit messages.
